UPDATE: SFPD Seek Public Assistance in Golden Gate Park Homicide Investigation
Update 10/9/15:
On Friday, October 9, 2015 the San Francisco Police department held a press conference at the Hall of Justice, 850 Bryant Street to update the public and the news media on the status of the investigation into the homicide of Audrey Carey. The following is a summary of the press conference given by Tony Chaplin, Commander of Investigations. On Saturday October 3, 2015 San Francisco Police responded to a call to check on the well being of a female that was face down in a wooded area of Golden Gate Park. This location was off of John F. Kennedy Drive and Chain of Lakes Drive. Officers responded and located a female victim, later identified as 23 year old Audrey Carey of Quebec, Canada. Carey was pronounced deceased at the scene by paramedics. San Francisco Police Homicide Inspectors initiated an investigation. Initial observations made at the scene were that the victim had experienced trauma to her head. The San Francisco Medical Examiner’s Office later determined that the victim suffered a gun shot wound to the head. On Monday, October 5, 2015, a shooting homicide occurred in Fairfax, Marin County, California. When San Francisco Police Homicide Inspectors learned of the shooting homicide in rural Fairfax, Marin County they reached out to Marin County Sheriff’s investigators due to the similarities of the two crimes; both were shooting homicides that occurred in wooded or park areas. In addition to investigating leads within San Francisco, SFPD Inspectors remained in close contact with Marin County investigators, following leads as they developed. Upon receiving notification from Marin County investigators that three suspects had be taken into custody in Portland, Oregon, two Inspectors from the San Francisco Police Homicide Detail traveled to Portland. Audrey Carey’s property, including camping gear, linking the suspects to the Golden Gate Park homicide was found in their possession when they were taken into custody in Oregon. A gun also was recovered, which we believe to have been used in both homicides. Investigators determined the gun was stolen between Sept 30th and Oct 1st of this year, in an auto burglary from a residential area of Fisherman's Wharf. At the time of the auto burglary, the gun was stored in a locked box inside the vehicle. The victim reported the theft to police at 4PM on Oct 1st, prompting an immediate investigation. Investigators were able to match the serial number of the stolen gun to the weapon that was found by Portland authorities when they arrested the three suspects in connection with the Marin County case. The three suspects will be charged with the robbery and murder of Audrey Carey. This is still an active and ongoing investigation and anyone with information is asked to contact the San Francisco Police Anonymous Tip Line at (415) 575-4444 or Text A Tip to TIP411 and begin the message with SFPD.
