SFPD Chief Bill Scott announces the arrest of police officer 22-084
Internal Affairs Division of the San Francisco Police Department conducted an investigation into an incident that led to the arrest
SAN FRANCISCO (June 27, 2022)- The San Francisco Police Department announced the arrest of a current San Francisco Police Department Officer.
In August of 2019, investigators from the SFPD Internal Affairs Division were notified of an incident involving fraud related to a vehicle damaged in a vehicle collision. SFPD investigators launched an investigation which established that Officer Adam Eatia committed theft by false pretense when he represented that the damaged vehicle was not insured and took money from the victim as compensation for the damage while off duty. Eatia also made fraudulent representations to his insurance company when applying for and making insurance claims for the vehicle. Additionally, Eatia impersonated an SFPD sergeant on the application for insurance.
During this lengthy and thorough investigation, Eatia, a 15-year veteran of the SFPD, was disarmed and transferred in September of 2021 to an assignment with non-public contact.
On June 22, 2022, a San Francisco Superior Court judge signed and issued an arrest warrant for Eatia. On Friday, June 24, 2022, Eatia voluntarily surrendered himself at San Francisco County Jail. Eatia was booked on the charges of grand theft by false pretense (487(a) PC), two counts of insurance fraud (550(b)(1) PC), identity theft (530.5(a) PC), and forgery (470(a) PC).
“The actions of this SFPD member violate the law and regrettably fall far short of our department’s shared values,” said San Francisco Police Chief William Scott. “As sworn police officers, we have no higher obligation than to earn and maintain public trust, and we are disappointed that this incident detracts from the outstanding work done by our officers and non-sworn members every day. At the same time, we are grateful to our Internal Affairs Division and its members for the thorough investigations they conducted and the case they presented to the special prosecution division of the San Francisco District Attorney’s Office.
Their diligence affirms our department’s commitment to accountability and the principle that no one — including a police officer — is above the law.”
