SFPD and Fire Department Fireworks Safety Information (17-100)

As 4th of July celebratory events approach, the San Francisco Police Department and the San Francisco Fire Department are reminding all residents and visitors that San Francisco has a zero tolerance policy for the use and sale of all fireworks.

Some facts:

  • Each year, more than 12,000 fireworks-related injuries- half of them involving children- are treated in the nation’s hospital emergency rooms. In San Francisco, the possession and use of fireworks such as sky rockets, bottle rockets, roman candles, aerial shells, firecrackers and other types that explode, go into the air, or move on the ground in an uncontrollable manner can lead to a possible fine or jail time in the county jail.  Even so-called “Safe and Sane” fireworks, such as fountains and sparklers, are illegal in San Francisco.
  • More than 25% of the children injured by fireworks are innocent bystanders.
  • Something as simple as a sparkler burns at temperatures up to 1,800 degrees- hot enough to melt gold.
  • Firework accidents cause millions of dollars in property losses each year.
  • Police will be enforcing fireworks possession and sales laws as well as doing safety education and outreach with merchants and community members.
  • Illegal vending of fireworks will not be allowed in and around Fisherman’s Wharf or any other area in the city limits.

San Francisco has an official, free public fireworks display starting at 9:30 PM on Tuesday, July 4th. The fireworks will be launched from barges near Pier 39 and Aquatic Park. Large crowds are expected to view the show along the waterfront and the use of public transportation is encouraged.

San Francisco residents and visitors are asked to do their part to prevent fires caused by fireworks.

Additionally, while the 4th of July is a time for celebration and fun, please remember there is a zero tolerance policy for the consumption of alcoholic beverages on public streets and public intoxication. Please use a designated driver or another safe mode of transportation when traveling around the city.

The San Francisco Police and Fire Departments urge San Franciscans to keep themselves and their neighborhoods safe this year. Non-emergency calls regarding the use of fireworks should be placed to the non-emergency dispatch line (415) 553-0123. To report the unlawful sale or storage of fireworks, you can call (415) 553-0123, the SFPD Tip Line at (415) 575-4444, or Text a Tip to TIP411 and begin the text message with SFPD.
