Carjacking of State Lottery Vehicle, Pursuit Leads to Officer Involved Shooting 17-179
Update - December 11, 2017 17- Identification of Officer Involved in the December 1st Officer Involved Shooting It is the policy of the San Francisco Police Department to identify officer (s) directly involved in an Officer Involved Shooting (OIS) within te n days of the incident, provided there are no credible threats against the officer (s) . The below listed officer dischar ged his firearm in an OIS incident at Fitzgerald Avenue and Gilman Street on December 1, 2017. Officer Christopher Samayoa #4135, assigned to the Field Operations Bureau. Carjacking of State Lottery Vehicle, Pursuit Leads to Officer Involved Shooting On December 1, 2017 at approximately 10:30 AM San Francisco Police officers responded to the 1800 block of 23rd Street regarding a carjacking robbery. A white van belonging to the California State Lottery was stolen. A female Lottery employee was assaulted and sustained non-life threatening injuries during the robbery. A second vehicle described as a gold SUV was observed at the scene and is believed to be involved in the robbery. San Francisco Police officers saw the State Lottery van and the SUV “caravanning” (travelling closely together in the same direction) through streets in the Bayview District. The vehicles split up and the SUV was stopped near Ingalls Street and Gillman Avenue. Several occupants of the SUV were detained. Other officers pursued the State Lottery van to Griffith Street and Fitzgerald Avenue where it stopped in front of a locked gate that closes the roadway. The suspect exited the Lottery van and an officer involved shooting occurred. The suspect was taken by ambulance to Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital (ZSFGH) where he was pronounced deceased. This is an active and ongoing investigation in the early stages. Body worn cameras from the officers involved in this incident have been retrieved and we are canvassing the area for other video that may be available. The SFPD Robbery Detail is investigating the carjacking and robbery. The SFPD Homicide Detail, The San Francisco District Attorney’s Office, the San Francisco Police Internal Affairs Division, the Department of Police Accountability and the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner are investigating.
